India delivered its best-ever overseas performance at the 22nd Asian U20 Athletics Championships, finishing second overall with a total of 19 medals, including 10 gold, 5 silver, and 4 bronze.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated the young Indian contingent for their standout showing, saying the result reflects the “determination and excellence” of the country’s emerging athletes.

In a post on X, he praised the performance and expressed hope that it would inspire more youth across the country to take up sports.

“Congratulations to the Indian contingent at the 22nd Asian U20 Athletics Championships for winning 19 medals, including 10 Golds. This outstanding performance reflects the determination and excellence of India’s young athletes. May these achievements inspire many more young Indians to pursue sports in the years to come,” Modi wrote in an X post.


The Athletics Federation of India described the campaign as a “statement performance,” highlighting India’s strong finish behind China in the overall standings.

“A Performance of Pure Statement. 10 Gold, 5 Silver, 4 Bronze. 19 medals. 2nd overall. A championship to remember for Team India at the Asian U20 Athletics Championships,” Athletics Federation of India (AFI) wrote in an X post.


India’s medal surge underlined depth across disciplines, with contributions coming from track events, relays, jumps, throws, and combined events across both men’s and women’s categories.

The result marks a significant milestone for India’s junior athletics program, reinforcing the country’s growing presence in continental athletics.
